NATURAL BUILDING

Natural construction methods for healthy, resilient homes.

Each method is selected for its thermal performance, natural character and ability to create homes that feel good to live in.

Alternative building methods

Straw bale construction by Zenbuild, Hawke's Bay — timber-framed wall with compressed straw bale infill

Straw Bale

Timber framed walls 450mm-600mm thick, infilled using compressed straw bales as insulation, finished with breathable natural clay/lime plasters.

Rammed earth wall by Zenbuild, Hawke's Bay — natural earth wall finish in a light-filled living room

Rammed Earth

Dense earth walls 350mm-400mm thick that provide thermal mass, strength and a rich, sculptural finish.

Light earth infill construction by Zenbuild, Hawke's Bay — timber-framed wall with packed straw and clay panels

Light Earth

Timber framed walls 140mm thick, infilled with packed straw coated with a clay slip. This can be finished internally in clay plasters, and externally in lime plaster or most regular cladding systems .

Adobe brick construction by Zenbuild, Hawke's Bay — hand-formed earth bricks laid out for curing

Adobe Brick

Traditional earth masonry that brings enduring calm, mass and natural warmth to a home. These can be bagged and left to show the brick finish, plastered internally in clay plaster, and externally in lime plaster.
